Words: Amanda Cunningham.
I caught a tempting taster of the Mighty Oak Sound System back in August and have been keeping an eye out for them since. I was deeply curious about the existence of a Dub crew in the unlikely Caribbean enclave of Hawick, deepest Scottish Borders. So when DubCombe Records put on a showcase night at Boteco de Brasil, Edinburgh on Friday 10th October, I booked a babysitter and headed into town.
DubCombe and Mighty Oak threw heavy-bass night, with great vibes and a really lovely crowd. We were treated to 4 sound crews: Edinburgh’s Curtis Gearty and Escape Roots Sound along with Mighty Oak Crew and Glasgow-based dub producer Maxiroots meets Longfingah, a German based MC, presenting their new productions. The night provided a great mix of Dub, Reggae and Dancehall. Heard some nice reworkings of some West Coast classics; skanked and danced for hours amongst the dreadlocked revellers and sadly left a little early to relieve the babysitter.
DubCombe Records meets Mighty Oaks again, on Saturday 8th November. Delivering a Digital versus Vinyl night at Banshee Labyrinth. Catch the rematch from 10pm. More info here.
